I’m always so fascinated how our own inner life reflects what’s happening in the outer world so exquisitely.
Have you noticed with world events and the erupting political divide how all these ‘goings-on’ effect your energy too?…(me X 100!)
How are these things in life impacting your relationship with food (and alcohol) , your other behaviors, your ability to be present or how you feel about yourself, your body and your progress with your health or weight?
Why does this ripple effect occur for so many of us?
Let’s take 2020 for example:
What the heck does COVID and ALL the media/expert contradictions, the confusion, the divide, some of the irrational and insane guidelines/mandates, the mysterious explosions, crazy weather, exposed crime networks, all the conspiracies and the upcoming election have to do with YOUR body and how you feel?
EVERYTHING.
You and I – all of us – are energetic beings. This is a scientific fact (not just woo). Emotions (or feelings) are energetic vibrations – sensations or frequencies – that exist and are felt in your body and transmitted through your energetic field.
These frequencies then ripple in and out from and to the “Collective” (aka: the world at large – all of us).
Think of it like the ocean. We’re each a drop in the ocean – but we flow WITH the ocean – each of us subtly effecting the energy of the tide – collectively – as a whole.
Depending on your personal patterns – you may feel EVERYTHING – (i.e., as a fellow empath) and/or you may have developed protective or compensatory adaptations to ‘block out’ the intense feelings as they surface in your consciousness.
Sometimes these blocks or adaptations can be external activities that are deemed ‘healthy’ in our modern society: exercise, healthy eating, being of service, caring for others, hobbies, creativity, self care, nature, meditation, stillness, deep connection, etc..
Sometimes the blocks can be harmful: i.e., using food, alcohol, drugs, spending, gambling, zoning out on technology, obsessing – basically anything overdone (including healthy things) – to escape or avoid feeling the intensity of those emotions.
(^ And/or you may operate in a prolonged state of sympathetic nervous system activation – aka: flight or flight – which may impact how you function – like energy metabolism, brain/mood, digestion, hormones, immunity, etc…)
Your biggest challenge – whether you’re struggling on the internal level (with your body, mind, health and habits), the micro level (things happening in your life outside of you body like relationships, family, work, finances, community) or the macro level (things happening in the world) – is to practice FEELING the emotions that are coming up for you – to allow them to be processed, released and then to shift back into a calm, neutral, balanced place < this is homeostasis or neutrality.
You (and only you) CHOOSE each and every emotion you experience (or avoid) based on the thoughts you choose about the circumstances in your body, life and the world.
This is your POWER.
And here’s something that hopefully makes you “feel better” (so that you don’t beat yourself up for having crappy thoughts and sh*tty feelings):
It’s totally human to think the worst. It’s your survival physiology doing its thing.
Which means:
It’s OK if you choose thoughts that evoke FEAR, UNCERTAINTY, RESENTMENT or OVERWHELM. (Let’s say…at the thought of your child going back to school – or homeschooling – or you or a loved one going back to work < a very current example for many these days.)
It’s totally OK to not be happy with the way your body feels or looks right now. (Thanks, Quarantine-15!)
It’s totally OK to have strong opinions about world events and politics – and to feel a certain way about someone in your life who says and thinks differently. (No comment :))
FEEL all of it.
Connect with it IN your body if you can…Here’s one way:
Close your eyes.
Breathe deeply from the belly as many times as you need to in order to be relaxed and calm.
Identify what emotion(s) you are experiencing.
Where are you experiencing this emotion in the body?
It may be a twisty gut, a pounding head, a clenched jaw, a pulsation down the spine, a fluttering in the throat or heart, ringing in the ears, a tight neck, cramps, flushes, dullness, anxiety, aches in the back, hip or knee, etc..
FIND it in the body.
BE with it.
Breathe into it and on the exhale, tell yourself something along the lines of: “It’s OK.”
Here’s the tricky part:
Yes, FEEL it….but don’t DWELL there – or ATTACH to it.
It’s all about being aware that you’re actually FEELING some sort of way – and then PROCESSING and RELEASING the charge – or energy – associated with it.
This allows you to alchemize, neutralize and surrender the intensity of the emotions and all the story you have around it.
Always remember: Feelings can’t hurt you. They’re simply energetic vibrations in your body.
Don’t judge them or hate them. They are gifts – messengers – reflecting your inner state of consciousness.
They are HERE to be noticed, experienced and transformed – not suppressed or denied. Don’t allow them to take over, but also don’t bypass them.
Practice safely experiencing them fully in the moment – or as soon as you can.
(I’ll do this before bed in a journal or in prayer. I surrender my fears or worries to God: “God, please take this from me. ” and then I go to sleep. This entire process is a transmutation which I consider to be a miracle – especially with all the worries, mindsets, patterns and attachments that I never believed I could change or “Let go of”.)
When your feelings are fully processed, you gently SHIFT back to neutrality – your center – your balance – that ‘peace and ease’ place with life. Calm. This is a place of acceptance, trust and love for yourself, others and LIFE – no matter how much you wish things were different.
REMEMBER: THIS IS A PRACTICE. You’ll miss things sometimes and that’s ok too. Just keep practicing.
