MY KETO EXPERIMENT – Month 1 Update

Just a quick update on my keto experiment. It’s been exactly a month of eating low carb, high fat, moderate protein and I feel GREAT!

Besides losing 5 pounds without any caloric restriction; (I eat amazing, rich in fat foods whenever I’m hungry) I want to share three more benefits I’m noticing by being in a state of nutritional ketosis.

  1. REDUCED APPETITE – I used to wake up pretty hungry and needed to eat every 3 hours to avoid that shaky, HANGRY feeling.  Now I wake up, have my bulletproof type coffee (coffee with – Coconut/MCT oil or Butter in it) and I’m not even hungry until 11-noon or even later – even if I work out hard.  I eat about twice a day loosely following the keto macros I shared last time  (75% fat, 20% protein, 5% carbs from non-starchy veggies only).
  2. MODERATE ALCOHOL IS OK – Although it can stall fat loss because the liver has to process the alcohol first,  I find I don’t crave alcohol like I used to and I can stop at 1 glass of wine or 1 Keto/Paleo Margarita without needing more. Even if I have more than 1, I’m still staying in ketosis (according to my urine keto sticks and now my Blood Ketone meter).  This is kind of a big deal for me, because I can totally live without carbs (as long as I can have fat!) , but I feel very deprived without wine socially – especially when everyone else is drinking and it’s a good bottle!
  3. FEEL MORE BALANCED – I just feel a nice little hummm all day. I used to be kind of blah and up and down and now I feel more up and level – no downs throughout the day. I’m also sleeping like a log and don’t wake up at 3-4am like I used to. This may be an indication that my brain is finally running on ketones (which does take about a month) – whatever it is, I love it!

So that’s my update so far.  I’ve now read 5 books on ketogenic diets, combed through many published studies and several articles, so I’m feeling very confident that this way of eating is totally doable, healthy and sustainable… for some, but definitely not for everyone.  Research reports that 1/3 of the population is more carb tolerant, but 2/3s of us aren’t – I believe I’m in the majority that cannot tolerate carbs, but we’ll see what 6 months (or more) will bring.  I’ll report back soon!

Keto/Paleo Margarita!

So easy!

1 shot of Tequila
Juice of 1/2 -1 lime
Club soda
Ice
Sea Salted rim (good for keto since we lose salt in ketosis)

Mix or blend, garnish with lime.  Limit to 1-2 per week before or after the Paleo Cleanse!
